Amy McHugh

Adult & Your Person Counsellor

I am an integrative counsellor with a foundation in the person centred approach. I believe that every individual has the capacity to change and grow when the right conditions are in place. These conditions can be found within the counselling relationship, where you will receive a warm, compassionate welcome and an environment that supports you to share and explore your experiences. Together we will work to understand what is happening for you, bringing clarity and self compassion. You choose what to bring, and I will follow where you need to go. I have a background in Early Years Education, working with children and supporting families in their parenting journeys. I also work with a local organisation delivering PSHE in schools, raising awareness of early childhood mental wellbeing and healthy, positive relationships.
Creative work has been part of my life for decades, beginning at Art College, then University, and later through my work in childcare, where I support and encourage artistic expression. I’ve seen how creative processes can gently unlock feelings and offer a bridge into deeper emotional work, especially when words feel limited or hard to find. During sessions, I may invite you to work creatively if this feels supportive for your processing; perhaps using clay, paint or sand. This is always optional and guided entirely by you and your needs. I work in a neurodiversity-affirming way, being responsive to your individual communication, emotional processing and sensory needs. Recognising that each of us perceives the world in our own unique way, and I hold this at the heart of my work with clients.

I joined Don’t Lose Hope as a Student Counsellor, instantly feeling that this is a special place, and am proud to now be part of the counselling team. Don’t Lose Hope is a uniquely special organisation, a much needed safe and welcoming space where people in our community can come and find connection and acceptance.
